Reviews and local SEO in 2026: what actually ranks
The eight review signals Google confirms it uses for local ranking, and the three that empirical studies suggest matter most.
Google publishes very little about the exact weight of any local-pack ranking signal, but its official 'How Google's local ranking works' documentation names reviews explicitly under 'Prominence'.
What Google confirms
The Business Profile Help doc lists 'high-quality, positive reviews and ratings' as improving prominence, and separately encourages business owners to 'respond to reviews' as a trust signal to Google and to future customers.
What studies suggest matters most
- Review recency: Whitespark's 2023 Local Search Ranking Factors survey ranked review recency in the top 10 factors for pack ranking.
- Reply rate: same study — reply consistency now sits ahead of many on-page factors for competitive local packs.
- Keyword mentions in reviews: reviews that mention the service or product by name correlate with ranking for that specific query.
The practical playbook
- Reply to every 1-, 2-, and 3-star review within 24 hours.
- Reply to at least 60% of 4- and 5-star reviews within a week.
- Ask reviewers to name the specific service they used — never the keyword you're chasing.
- Measure reply-rate and average reply-time monthly.
