Yelp review reply templates

Yelp treats replies as a signal in its recommendation filter and gives you two channels — public comment and direct message. These templates are the shapes we send from HappyReplies for both.

Yelp reply rules

  • Public Comment vs Direct Message — two distinct channels, choose deliberately.
  • Solicitation for reviews is against Yelp policy — never ask in a reply.
  • You can flag reviews that violate policy (fake, competitor sabotage, hate speech).
  • Yelp's recommendation filter can hide legitimate reviews — never mention the filter in a reply.

Tone notes

Yelp reviewers are typically more detailed than Google's — match the length. Named, warm, no jargon.

6 templates

1. Elite reviewer, 5-star

Review

"Long detailed rave from an Elite reviewer."

Reply

"Hi Priya — a detailed review from an Elite reader is a serious compliment. Thank you for taking the time. — Marco, owner"

2. 3-star, honest middle

Review

"Food was good, service was uneven."

Reply

"Hi Sam — uneven service is on us to fix, not on the food to compensate for. I've raised it with the floor team. Come back and let me know. — Marco"

3. 1-star, specific

Review

"Waited 45 minutes for a starter."

Reply

"Hi Chris — 45 minutes for a starter is beyond anything we call service. Email hello@ourplace.com and I'll put a table aside on us. — Marco, owner"

4. Filtered / suspicious

Review

"Very short, no detail, first-time reviewer."

Reply

"Hi — thank you for the feedback. If you'd like to share more, please email hello@ourplace.com. — Marco"

5. Direct message follow-up

Review

"Detailed private message about a bad visit."

Reply

"Hi Jamie — thank you for taking the time to write privately. I'll look into what happened and come back to you tomorrow. — Marco, owner"

6. Competitor sabotage

Review

"Clearly not a real customer."

Reply

"Hi — we can't find a booking or receipt matching this review and have flagged it to Yelp for review. — Marco"

FAQ

Should we always reply publicly or use direct message?
Public for anything future readers benefit from seeing (accountability, general context). Direct message for anything specific to that person.
Does replying to Yelp reviews affect the recommendation filter?
Yelp doesn't publish its weights, but consistent, specific replies from a verified business are one of many signals it uses.
Can we ask a Yelp reviewer to update a review?
Never — Yelp's policy explicitly forbids any review solicitation, and reviewers routinely report it.
