Google reply rules

  • One reply per review — Google doesn't allow threaded replies.
  • You can edit a reply after publishing, but the timestamp updates.
  • No links to another review platform (Yelp, TrustPilot) — Google will remove them.
  • Never quote personal contact detail publicly.

Tone notes

Named, first-person, one paragraph. Google's algorithm rewards consistency; readers reward specificity.

3. 1-star, specific complaint

"Went back after they replied and it was much better."

Reply

"Hi Alex — thank you for coming back to update. That means more to us than the first review. — Ellie"

FAQ

How fast should we reply to a Google review?
Within 24 hours for anything below four stars, within a week for the rest. Google weights consistency more than speed alone.
Can we ask a customer to update a Google review?
Yes, if the ask is genuine and private — never in the public reply.
Does Google penalise auto-replies?
Google does not explicitly penalise them, but visibly identical replies across multiple reviews reduce reader trust and can be reported.
