How to reply to 4-star Google reviews (turn 4s into 5s)

A 4-star review is a compliment with a whisper of criticism. The reply that mines that whisper is the one that turns a 4-star into a repeat 5-star customer.

TL;DR

Thank them, ask (implicitly) what would have made it 5, and give them a reason to come back and find out. 4-star reviewers convert to 5-star repeats more than any other cohort.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Lead with what they praised

Quote the specific detail. 'Glad the pasta hit — Marco takes pride in that dish.'

  2. 2

    Softly acknowledge the missing star

'Anything we could nail next time, tell us — we're stubborn about the 5th star.'

  3. 3

    Name a reason to return

New menu, upcoming special, a person to ask for. Concrete pull, not generic 'come back'.

FAQ

Should I ask them to update the review to 5?
Never — it violates Google's guidelines. Focus on the return visit; the update often follows.
