2-star reply templates
How to reply to a 2-star Google review (15 templates)
The 2-star review is the one owners under-reply to. It reads as "nearly" — enough good to be honest, enough bad to keep them from returning. Treated well, it converts more future readers than a 1-star recovery ever will.
The 3-line framework
- Name the specific gap between what they wanted and what they got.
- Say what has changed as a result — a real process change, not a vague "we'll do better".
- Invite them back with a named person, not a generic "we'd love to see you again".
Never do this
- Don't defend the good bits. They gave you two stars, not none — they know.
- Don't ask them to raise the star rating. That violates Google's guidelines and reads as desperate.
- Don't leave it unreplied. 2-star with no reply is the worst signal on your profile.

1. Nearly good, food
Review
"Mains were great but the starter was cold and the wine list was tiny."
Reply
"Hi Sam — a cold starter kills the meal, no matter how good the mains. We've retrained the pass on hold times. On the wine list, you're right — we've been building a new one and it lands next month. Reply here and I'll set you up on the new-list preview night. — Marco"
2. Salon, mixed
Review
"Cut was fine, but the wash-basin water was cold and the wait was long."
Reply
"Hi Priya — the cut is the easy bit; the whole experience is the salon, and cold water plus a wait isn't it. We've fixed the wash-basin thermostat this week. If you're up for another visit, book direct with me and I'll comp the wash. — Ellie"
3. Hotel, mixed
Review
"Room was lovely but breakfast was underwhelming."
Reply
"Hi Alex — breakfast is what people remember, and "underwhelming" is the honest word. We changed our breakfast supplier in May and would like to see if your view holds. Email hello@ourhotel.com and I'll add a complimentary breakfast to your next stay. — Sam"
4. Dentist, mixed
Review
"The dentist was kind but I was in the waiting room for 40 minutes."
Reply
"Hi Chris — a 40-minute wait after a specific appointment time is not the practice we want to run. We've moved to a 15-minute buffer between complex appointments from this month; earlier bookings run closer to time. Sorry for the delay."
5. Plumber, mixed
Review
"Fixed the leak but left the kitchen a mess."
Reply
"Hi Jamie — a clean finish is part of the job. I've covered this with the crew and updated our end-of-visit checklist to include the site tidy. If you'd like us back out to sort the kitchen, that's on me. — Dave, owner"
6. Gym, mixed
Review
"Nice equipment, staff never say hello."
Reply
"Hi Sam — the equipment is meaningless if the welcome isn't there. We've added a floor host to the peak sessions from Monday. Come find me at reception and I'll introduce you — Nadia, manager."
7. Cafe, mixed
Review
"Coffee was great, food was cold."
Reply
"Hi Tom — thanks for being fair on the coffee, but cold food is cold food. Our brunch pass had a hot-hold gap on Sundays; that's fixed. Drop in and I'll grab you a proper plate. — Ellie"
8. Retail, mixed
Review
"Lovely shop, staff seemed rushed and short."
Reply
"Hi Nadia — rushed and short is never the shop we want to be. Saturdays are our tightest staffing day and we're recruiting for it now. Email me if you'd like a private appointment — that's on us. — Priya"
9. Barber, mixed
Review
"Cut was ok, place felt cold."
Reply
"Hi Chris — a cold shop with a fine cut is still a cold shop. We've had the heating serviced this week. Book in with me directly next time and I'll fit the beard trim in for free. — Sam"
10. Restaurant, mixed
Review
"Food great, waited 20 minutes to order."
Reply
"Hi Priya — the wait to order is the wait that matters most; the rest is bonus. We were short a floor cover that night. If you'd like another go, email me and I'll book you a table with priority service. — Marco"
11. Auto repair, mixed
Review
"Fixed the car, kept it two days longer than promised."
Reply
"Hi Alex — a two-day overrun is a two-day rental for someone. We had a parts delay on the caliper and should have called you daily, not once. From this month we're calling every 24 hours on any job over two days. Sorry for the disruption. — Dave"
12. Hair salon, technical
Review
"Colour was off from the reference."
Reply
"Hi Ellie — colour off-reference is a free fix within seven days for any client. Reply here or call the salon; I'd like our senior colourist to put it right. — Priya"
13. Vet, mixed
Review
"Kind with the dog but the bill was a surprise."
Reply
"Hi Jamie — being kind isn't enough if the cost lands as a shock. From this month we're printing an itemised estimate before treatment on anything over £150. Thanks for the fair review — it's the change I'd been meaning to make."
14. Hotel, mixed
Review
"Great location, thin walls."
Reply
"Hi Sam — the location is the location and the walls are the walls, but we can offer quieter rooms if you tell us at booking. Email hello@ourhotel.com and I'll flag your file so any future stay lands in the rear wing."
15. Cleaning, mixed
Review
"Good clean, missed the bathroom vents."
Reply
"Hi Tom — thanks for the specifics — bathroom vents are on our deep-clean list, not the weekly one, and it looks like our booking form didn't make that clear. I've fixed the form. Reply here for a free vent-clean on the next visit."
FAQ
- Why is a 2-star review harder to reply to than a 1-star?
- Because the reviewer wanted to like you. A 1-star reply looks generous; a 2-star reply has to prove you understood what nearly worked and what didn't.
- Should I offer them something to come back?
- Yes, if it's specific and small. A free coffee, a comped wash, a priority booking. A blanket discount reads as bribery; a specific fix reads as accountability.
- Can I ask a 2-star reviewer to update their review?
- You can invite them to try you again, but never ask for a rating change directly — Google's guidelines forbid soliciting rating edits and other customers can see the ask.
- Does replying to 2-star reviews help local ranking?
- Yes. Google's reply-rate signal weights consistency, and prospective customers spend the longest time on 2-star and 3-star reviews when they're comparing you to a competitor.
