3-star reply templates
How to reply to a 3-star Google review (12 templates)
3-star reviewers are the most useful customers you'll ever have. They cared enough to write, they weren't angry, and they told you exactly what to fix. The reply is where you show every future customer that you listened.
The 3-line framework
- Thank them for the honest rating — not for the review, for the rating.
- Restate the specific gap they named.
- Show the change you've made or are making — with a date if possible.
Never do this
- Never open with "we're sorry you didn't enjoy your visit" — they did enjoy it, just not enough. That opener tells every future reader you weren't listening.
- Never ask them to update the rating.
- Never leave it unreplied. Google's Search Liaison confirmed in 2023 that reply consistency across all star ratings is a local signal — not just the low ones.

1. Restaurant, honest 3
Review
"Food was good, service was fine, nothing wrong but nothing special."
Reply
"Hi Sam — thank you for the honest three; "nothing special" is the most useful review we've had this month. We're changing the menu on the 1st with three specials designed to be the reason people remember the visit. Book direct and I'll make sure you get one. — Marco"
2. Hotel, mid
Review
"Room was clean, bed was ok, breakfast average."
Reply
"Hi Alex — three fair scores and one honest gap on breakfast. We changed our breakfast supplier in May; if you're back in town, email hello@ourhotel.com and I'll add a complimentary breakfast. — Sam"
3. Salon, mid
Review
"Cut was fine, wasn't blown away."
Reply
"Hi Priya — a fine cut is the floor for us, not the ceiling. Reply here with your usual stylist and I'll book you in for a colour-match consult with our senior — that's usually where "fine" becomes "back next month". — Ellie"
4. Cafe, quiet 3
Review
"Nice enough, coffee was ok."
Reply
"Hi Tom — "nice enough" is a fair three. We're refining our espresso blend this month and I'd love your read on it. Come in on a Tuesday and ask for Ellie — first cup on me."
5. Gym, mid
Review
"Equipment fine, classes ok, not much atmosphere."
Reply
"Hi Chris — atmosphere is the hardest thing to fix and the most honest thing to be told. We've added Saturday-morning group sessions in July. Try one on us — reply here and I'll add your name."
6. Dentist, mid
Review
"Clean practice, dentist was fine."
Reply
"Hi Nadia — a clean practice and a fine dentist is a reasonable three; we'd like to be the one you actively recommend, not just accept. If there was anything specific we could have done better, email hello@ourpractice.com. — Ellie, practice manager"
7. Vet, mid
Review
"Kind staff, the wait was long."
Reply
"Hi Jamie — the wait is the story of the visit for you. We've added a Wednesday-evening walk-in slot from July to spread the load. Book direct and I'll flag your file. — Sam"
8. Hair salon, mid
Review
"Colour was fine but not exactly what I asked."
Reply
"Hi Priya — "fine but not exactly" is a free adjustment for any client within seven days. Reply here or call and I'll book our senior colourist to nudge it right. — Ellie"
9. Plumber, mid
Review
"Job done, could have explained the price better."
Reply
"Hi Dave — thanks for calling that out; a clear price up-front is the difference between a three and a five. From this month every job over £150 gets an itemised written estimate before we start. — Marc, owner"
10. Barber, mid
Review
"Ok cut, place is very small."
Reply
"Hi Chris — the shop is snug and always will be. We've added a Sunday appointment-only session with a full-length seat for anyone who prefers space. Reply if you'd like on the list."
11. Retail, mid
Review
"Nice shop, wasn't greeted for a while."
Reply
"Hi Nadia — the welcome is the shop, and if you weren't greeted, we weren't the shop we want to be. We've moved a second team member to the door on Saturdays from this weekend. Thanks for the honest three. — Priya"
12. Hotel, mid
Review
"Central and clean, front desk seemed rushed."
Reply
"Hi Sam — a rushed front desk is a slow arrival. We've added a second check-in station for the 3–6pm peak this month. Email me your next reservation and I'll flag it for a personal welcome. — Ellie"
FAQ
- Is a 3-star Google review actually bad?
- It's the most honest rating you'll see. 3-stars are usually written by returning customers who care enough to tell you what's fine and what isn't. Treat them as free consultancy.
- How do I turn a 3-star reviewer into a 5-star one?
- You don't ask. You reply publicly with the specific change you're making, then invite them back with a named person and a specific offer. The rating change follows the experience change.
- Should the reply be shorter or longer than a 1-star reply?
- Similar length. Under 400 characters is our default — long enough to be specific, short enough that Google doesn't truncate in the local pack.
- Do 3-star replies affect SEO?
- Yes — reply-rate consistency across every rating is what matters. A profile that replies to every 3-star review outperforms one that only responds to complaints.
